Third Experiment: A Month of Sparking Joy

My plants spark so much joy!

My plants spark so much joy!

"We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of...take each item in one's hand and ask: Does this spark Joy? If it does, keep it. If not dispose of it."  -Marie Kondo

It's Spring! Don't you just feel like decluttering your house and getting a new haircut? Even though I basically didn't hibernate at all throughout this non-winter, I still feel the need to shed the old and welcome the new. Maybe it's the blossoming foliage and blooming wildflowers all around me that's triggering my symbolic death and renewal. Who knows, but I'm ready for a month of letting go!

For my third experiment, I will be using the bible of all cleaning books, The Life -Changing Magic of Tidying Up as a guide to create a life where everything in it "Sparks Joy." I first read Marie Kondo's book a year ago and it completely shifted the way I look at my things. At first you think you're buying an ordinary organization book and you pop out the other end having realized she Jedi mind tricked you into learning zen philosophy through the medium of your belongings.

For Example:

“When we really delve into the reasons for why we can’t let something go, there are only two: an attachment to the past or a fear for the future.”

“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.”

“The true purpose of tidying is, I believe, to live in the most natural state possible. Don’t you think it is unnatural for us to possess things that don’t bring us joy or things that we don’t really need? I believe that owning only what we love and what we need is the most natural condition.”

God, I love Marie Kondo! I'm sort of being dramatic but the book, as stated in the title, is pretty life changing. Ok I'll stop fawning over my Japanese cleaning idol and get to business.

The Experiment: For the month of April, I will use the art of decluttering to fully live a life that "sparks joy."

The Rules: Her rule is pretty simple. If the item sparks joy, keep it. If it doesn't, let it go. I will follow her book as a guide to declutter my home but also expand the notion of "sparking joy" in other areas of life. Does eating the whole pint of ice cream right now really spark joy? I gueessssss not.

The Reason:  Tidying is just a tool, not the final destination. The true goal should be to establish the lifestyle you want most once your house has been put in order.” This month is not really about tidying up, it's a meditation on life. Its about really getting to the core of what you want and what you need to let go of, both physically and symbolically. Also, I  just want my whole life to "spark joy!"
