Day 12: Sweet & Savory Oatmeal
I used to hate oatmeal. My Texan grandmother gave it to me for the first time when I was eight years old. I had just moved back from Japan and the concept of oatmeal was not only foreign but disgusting to me. Why the hell are we eating a bowl of sweet gruel for breakfast? I'm used to fish and miso and rice! I threw up.
When I was a kid in Japan I would go to my American neighbor's house and be so weirded out by Lucky Charms and chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. I'm down for a good french toast now but I still prefer savory to sweet in the morning.
Sooo I adapted the oatmeal Japanese style. Add green onions, a fried egg, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Tadaa! Asian oatmeal. I had miso soup with it too. Delicious!
P.S. I've started my no going out to eat rule!
