Day 8: I'm Building a Capsule Wardrobe

I have to say I am loving this experiment! My bank account, not so much ;p.

I started out my experiment strong and had lots of fun with my outfits. But literally just 4 days in, I started having difficulty putting cute outfits together. How is that possible? I realized that when I decluttered my wardrobe in January, I left myself with only a few Spring pieces and most of it didn’t really go together. I got into an e-commerce spiral and had to get out!

I went over to my friend Leyla’s house and told her I was having a hard time figuring out my aesthetic. She said that she wasn’t really into the oversized simple look that’s so popular right now and she preferred the chic and sexy French look. I mostly agreed even thought I own a few boxy pieces, I didn’t really want to invest in anymore. She showed me lots of brands and as we oooohed and ahhhed together, my style began to form. I went home and had a focus. I realized I wanted to just have a few quality pieces that really looked great on my body. After some digging, I stumbled upon the concept of a capsule wardrobe and suddenly I felt I had found the answer to all of my questions about the universe! Or maybe just the universe of my closet.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a limited seasonal wardrobe that you select intentionally. You pair down your items to around 25-35 pieces including shoes and you only wear those items together for 3 months. After the season is over, you can take your favorite pieces and bring them into the next season and round out the new season with a few more items. As someone who is constantly trying to find systems to organize my chaos, the capsule wardrobe gives me the structure I’m craving.

I’ve already put away all my winter gear and selected the items I want to keep for the capsule. Now it’s time to shop and finish building the capsule for my spring wardrobe! I’m so excited to put this together and see if it’s something I want to try long term!
